Name geändert in Dundee United in 1923
It was in the Spring of 1909 that the Irish community in Dundee
got together to form a football club following the demise of
Dundee Harp three years earlier.
Tannadice was the scene for Dundee Hibs debut in the Scottish League
and although opponents Leith Athletic won 3-2 Hibs quickly earned a
reputation as cup fighters and on 25 March 1911 won the
Forfarshire Cup, another local cup competition, at the first attempt
There was one more fundamental change to take place in
1923. In order to attract wider appeal, the club decided to drop
the reference to Hibernian from their title. Dundee City was
their favoured choice but this led to a protest by city rivals
Dundee. Ultimately the name of Dundee United was adopted and accepted
by the powers that be on 26th October 1923. Twenty four hours later
there was a less than auspicious start when the newly named United
went down 3-0 to Dumbarton at Boghead.
